Detroit City Shines with Tinsel-Town Locations
Places like Detroit and other parts of Michigan know the long-term economic benefits that filming locally can bring to a location. For instance, couples who have enjoyed Somewhere in Time, starring Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve, are still drawn to Mackinac Island where the film was shot in 1979. And according to Free Press columnist Mitch Ablom and Michigan native and filmmaker Mike Binder, Michigan's cities, countryside, beachfront, and changing seasons are just a few of the elements that can make Michigan a preferred site for the film industry, given bigger financial incentives and other assistance to people who make movies. Detroit City's huge inventory of empty warehouse buildings could offer some exciting possibilities as sound stages. Ann Knapp 04/07/2008

Is Ann Arbor Going Hollywood? Moviemakers Take Renewed Interest in Filming Here
"A movie is not just filming. They need places where there are production assistants sitting at desks, making phone calls. They need good office space. They need places to process films and do dailies and have screening rooms," said Newcombe Clarke, a principal with Bluestone Realty Advisors in Ann Arbor. "They have said to us, 'Ann Arbor makes sense not only because of its location but because of its more comfortable back-office environment.' " Roger LeLievre | The Ann Arbor News
